Multimedia sand filters technical information
Multimedia sand filters are used for the treatment of water loaded with solids and turbidity. Thanks to its filtering bed based on flint and anthracite, these suspended solids are captured from the water and retained inside the filter.
The filtration process of industrial water by means of this type of systems consists of its passage through the interior of the filter obtaining a precipitation in depth of the solids in suspension and organic matter that is in the water to be treated. This process will be developed constantly until the saturation of the flint/anthracite filter media. At that moment it will be necessary to proceed to carry out a backwash inside the filtration equipment in order to send to discharge all the solids and organic matter captured in its interior. This backwashing can be done by operating manual valves or activating automatic valves.
For the design of a water filter with sand bed it is necessary to take into account the speed of passage of the water to be treated through its interior, knowing that depending on its characteristics we will be able to work at higher or lower speeds.
The recommended filtration velocities will be between 10 and 20 m/h to ensure maximum performance to remove turbidity and suspended solids.

Working parameters
All IMA water sand filters work at pressures up to 10 bar, guaranteeing their watertightness. They are made of high resistance GRP and are especially suitable for the treatment of river, well, lake and sea water. They can be installed in water treatment plants with the combination of other water treatment technologies such as activated carbon filters, arsenic reduction, iron and reverse osmosis.
It is important to use multimedia filter media with sand base to increase the performance of the filters, for this purpose, our technical team has made a multilayer sand filter bed formed by Silex and anthracite of different diameters, being able to reach filtration volumes of less than 5 microns.
This distribution of layers inside the IMA water sand filters gives the filter the capacity to work at different filtration speeds, being the most recommended to maximize the performance 10-15 m/h.
How does it work?
Regarding the operating parameters of the sand filters, it should be taken into account that depending on the quality of the inlet water, periodic backwashing should be carried out to avoid filter malfunction and perforation of the filter bed. All IMA water filters are shipped assembled with inlet/outlet pressure gauges to check the pressure differences and to guarantee that the backwashing is carried out at the correct time.
Another important parameter to take into account in the good choice of the size of the filters, analyzing the details of the place where it should be installed, for this purpose it is necessary to know exactly the equipment or filters that accompany the system and to be able to size it according to these.
Normally our technical team designs all sand filters with approximate velocities of 10 m/h to achieve the maximum quality of treated water. This is because the collection of solids is directly related to the speed of passage through the filter, so the lower the speed, the more organic matter, turbidity and suspended solids are removed, providing quality water to the following treatment equipment such as activated carbon filters or industrial reverse osmosis plants.

Models
IMA water sand filters cover the whole spectrum of filtration sizes, being able to adapt to any size of water treatment equipment. We have industrial filters from 300 mm diameter up to 1600 mm.
The selection of the correct model should be studied depending on the application and water treatment to be carried out in each project and installation. For this sizing we recommend that you contact an expert engineer who can advise you and adapt the filter to your type of water.
