Greywater and rainwater reuse plants

Why recycle graywater?

With the development of human activity, water needs have been increasing exponentially in recent years. World population growth will increase by up to 30% by 2040, and the field of water reuse is one of the most important sectors for solving future water shortages in any part of the world.

In order to achieve sustainable growth and take advantage of wastewater, it is necessary to fully recycle it for use in activities such as irrigation and cleaning.

The reuse of wastewater should be carried out through water treatment plants specially designed for this purpose, taking into account the type of water to be recycled (rainwater, wastewater and graywater).

Greywater reuse systems

Recycling gray water is a process increasingly used in industrial and recreational complexes, with the objective of using the water generated for irrigation and cleaning tasks with the aim of reducing overall water consumption by up to 40%. This represents a significant saving for the company or complex.

The water reuse plants are tailor-made for the different types of water generated, adapting the water for its subsequent reuse.

What types of water can be reused?

There are three different types of water that can be reused, each of them must be treated with different technologies depending on their characteristics, these types are:

  1. Treated wastewater: The reuse of wastewater is carried out when it has been treated by the wastewater treatment plant. This water is recommended for irrigation and cleaning.
  2. Gray water: This water comes from showers and toilets, its recycling can be used for irrigation of gardens and crops.
  3. Rainwater: The treatment of this type of water for its subsequent use falls within the rainwater reuse sector, obtaining it totally disinfected and suitable for its use.

The main sectors in which graywater reuse is applied are:

  • Business and industry
  • Hotels
  • Schools
  • Sports centers
  • Recreational complexes
  • Farms and agriculture
  • Farms and animal industry

With new technologies IMA water has managed to develop its compact wastewater treatment plants tailor-made for the different types of water to be recycled such as wastewater, greywater and rainwater. Gray water filtering systems are composed of several industrial filtration units that perform the different water treatments in order to reuse it for cleaning, irrigation of crops and gardens.

The models developed by our IMA Water filtration units include the following equipment:

  • Raw water feeding pumps: They will be in charge of feeding the reuse plant from the deposit or tank where it is stored. The pumping system will be controlled by the central control panel of the greywater reuse plant, achieving a unified installation both internally and externally.
  • Inlet raw water shock disinfection system: An inlet disinfection system will be installed to favor a first disinfection of the water to be treated in order to keep the whole process free of bacterial colonies and to carry out a first safety disinfection of the process.
  • Filters for wastewater: These industrial filters will be in charge of a first treatment of solids, turbidity and residual matter.
  • Chemical absorption filtration system: It will remove chemicals, odors and color present in the graywater for reuse.
  • High performance filtration system below 0.5/1 micron: This equipment will be in charge of performing a final refining filtration reaching microfiltration values below 1 micron. Obtaining a water free of solids, organic matter, odor, color and chemicals.
  • Ultraviolet UV or chemical disinfection of the output water: Finally, a second disinfection is performed on the output water to ensure the quality of the water reused by the plant.
  • Automatic control panel for the water treatment plant: A customized electrical panel will be manufactured for the general control of the graywater reuse plant.

In IMA water we have a wide range of designs of compact plants for water reuse.  As in the rest of our water treatment equipment, we work with different compact designs with options of mounting on frame and adapted container.
